Artificial intelligence is an umbrella term for computer systems designed to perform tasks associated with perception, reasoning, language, or action. Some AI is built from explicit rules. Machine learning takes another route: a model is fitted to examples so it can detect patterns and make predictions.

From machine learning to language models

Deep learning is a branch of machine learning that uses neural networks with many learned numerical parameters. Generative AI describes systems that produce new content, such as text, images, or audio. A large language model is a deep-learning model trained to process and generate language. These labels overlap, but they are not interchangeable: not every AI system learns from data, and not every generative system is an LLM.

  • AI names the broad goal or field.
  • Machine learning describes systems that learn patterns from data.
  • Deep learning uses multi-layer neural networks.
  • An LLM is a language-focused model that can generate text; an application may add tools or retrieval around it.
